Sefton Central Blog

Blogging our way to a better Sefton!

Welcome to the blog of Sefton Central Conservative Association.

In this blog we aim;

  • to keep you up to date with the work we are doing on the ground in terms of campaigning
  • keep you notified of the problems and issues that the public are telling us about
  • and more importantly what we are doing to tackle them.

The blog is contributed to by everyone from Sefton Central Conservative Association.  So we'll have reports from the officers about the events we hold and what fun you missed out on if you couldn't attend or are not a member.  There'll be updates from our Parliamentary Spokesperson Debi Jones, and the work she is doing to ensure that the next MP for the constituency is Conservative.  And we'll also have updates from the Councillors or Ward representatives about the work they are doing.

We aim to update the blog at least once a week, so please keep checking back.

Delivery

Good Morning (Well it is when I am writing this at 7.15am)

Just to let you know that we are delivering this afternoon in the areas of Molyneux, Park and Sudell.

I want to keep the opposition guessing about the areas we are targetting so I wont reveal here where we are going.  If you are interested in joining us then please phone the office on

0151-924-1055

so we can give you the secret password to come and join our band of merrymen (okay not a secret password, just the time and location that we are meeting).

If you cannot fit in with our rigorous delivery timetable but would still like to help we can always find a bag of leaflets for you to take at your convenience, you can even choose which area you would like to deliver in.

AOL

In one of the newspapers last week there was an article concerning users of AOL email accounts-of which the Conservative Association is one.

The story was about how AOL had somehow managed to delete the inboxes and saved messages of many of its users.  After checking the status on our account we found out that this problem had extended itself to our email address.  AOL assure users that the emails have been permanently deleted and that there is no way of retrieving them.

Therefore, if any of our readers had contacted us since 1st March and not received a response, left us a request to join our mailing list, or wrote something in the Contact Us section PLEASE GET IN CONTACT AGAIN.  The messages all go straight throught to our crosbytoriesuk@aol.com email address which means that all such communications have been lost.

Sorry for any inconvenience

This confirms what we already knew!

Have just found the entry for Sefton Central on the Electoral Calculus website, it predicts what we here at the Conservative Association already knew. That is that our constituency will swing to the Conservatives, we are still left unconvinced by the tiny majority that they Debi will win by but a win is a win.

We are now determined to prove the people at Electoral Calculus are right in the fact that they award us the win, but that the numbers are wrong, we expect a much bigger swing.

Unfortunately, other websites (UK Polling Report) are still calculating the next General Election result by basing their information on 2005, they have obviously not included the various factors that we have.   We just hope that they can see sense and that next time they look at their colour coded constituency map turn the seat of Sefton Central from

RED to BLUE!

Myspace & Facebook

Myspace & Facebook are online communities where users can join interest groups and create profiles about themselves to connect to millions of users around the world.

Sefton Central have had an online presence in these forums since before Christmas but we are now actively seeking members.  We are unhappy that Labour Leadership contenders have been jumping on the bandwagon of the Conservative MP Boris Johnson who has more than 7,500 'friends'.  Here is a link to a BBC article from earlier today

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6551689.stm

Here in Sefton Central we have been connecting mostly with other Conservative Associations as a way of arranging reciprocal help, but would like to throw it open to our supporters. So please follow the links below:

If you are unsure about myspace/facebook ask your kids or grandkids to give you a hand (these sites are extremely familiar to most teenagers)-failing that send us a message for us to give you a hand.

Campaigning

Dear Volunteers (people of Sefton and anyone else who reads this blog)

The election campaign is hotting up and we are out camapigning everyday from dawn to dusk.  Besides the serious side to campaigning we do enjoy ourselves and are not adverse to finishing a hard days work with a drink in the pub, so if you want to meet us after we've finished to get to know us better before before joining us before delivering then please email us so we can tell you where we will be.

We have unfortunately had to put on hold our plans for campaigning tomorrow  in the Molyneux ward.....we didn't fancy trying to challenge the 150,000 crowd going to the Grand National, plus the fact that trying to drive down Ormskirk Road to get their.  Plus, did you know that other than Ormskirk Road the only way to get from the North of the ward to the South is to cross the Melling Road, i.e. the one that crosses the racecourse.  Somehow, we didn't think it would be practical to try to challenge the stringent security nor trying to go against the direction of the crowd.

We will still be out n about in the North of the constituency so please feel free to join us

Police Reform

David Cameron has made police reform a priority for the Conservative Party.  On becoming Leader of the Party he appointed Nick Herbert as Shadow Minister for Police Reform with a brief to lead a Taskforce on the issue.  The interim report of the Taskforce, available to download here, builds on the direction set out in two keynote speeches by David Cameron and sets out proposals for further consultation.

The report is not a statement of Party policy, which will be agreed in due course.  We make no specific spending pledges at this stage.  Instead we make the case that money could be spent much better.  Central to the report is the notion, endorsed by the Treasury, that very substantial resources could be released from reforms to the way the police work.

The Taskforce has no formal membership.  This website and our report are the products of hundreds of discussions and meetings over the course of the last year with police officers of all ranks, including field visits to various forces, as well as all those with an interest and expertise in policing – officials, think tanks, academics, police authorities, and above all the public.  We have also been informed by a large volume of letters and e-mails, especially from serving officers.

We now want to consult widely on these ideas.  We have set up this website so that we can receive views from all concerned – police officers, experts and the public.  Over the course of the next few weeks we will be holding specialist seminars on the key areas identified for reform in the report.  We will be visiting more police forces and talking to as many officers of all ranks as possible.

Happy Easter!

HAPPY EASTER!

We've been working hard towards the May election for many months and most of our wonderful volunteers are going to have a little rest over Easter-so forgive us if we are not as visible as we usually are over the weekend.

There will of course be the hardcore of our team out campaigning, so if you see them please don't be afraid to offer your help.

NHS Action Day

Again, yesterday, our PPC (Prospective Parliamentary Candidate) Debi Jones was out working her socks of and handing out leaflets and getting petitions signed to oppose the NHS cuts proposed by Gordon Brown.

Debi believes that should Gordon become Prime Minister that the state of the country can only get worse, just like our pensions prospects, so she is fighting hard to ensure that the NHS is not ruined by the Government.

We hope that if you couldn't join us yesterday to sign our petition then you can do so online, in the survey section of this site.

Its that time of year again!

Nomination Papers for those that want to stand as council candidates must be handed in by NOON on the 4th April.

For those not in the know, this means candidates have to trail round their ward trying to get signatures of 10 people that assent to the individual being nominated to stand in the local elections.

This is harder than it sounds.  You wouldn't think that trying to get 10 signatures of your local supporters would be difficult.  However, knocking on doors to see if they are in and to no response (even when you have left answer machine messages to tell them you will be turning up) means that you could be out looking for your members for a long time.

Then multiply this by 7 wards across the constituency, means you could be out for days at a time.  Luckily, we are very organised and had them all nomination papers completed within 2 days.

Here in Sefton Central we also give reciprocal help to our neigbouring constituency of Bootle (two of our wards from the old Crosby are now part of the seat-and we still like to help), and because we don't know the area as well, it means getting the maps out and getting lost quite a lot just to find the houses of one or two known supporters-our agent even helped out in her home patch of Knowsley.  However, at the end of a long hard day it is a good team building exercise and you always have plenty to talk about in the pub later: mostly suggestions of what they would like the candidates to do once they are elected councillors.
